Jarebu – day-hike cabin in Bykle
From this cabin you get a magnificent view in all directions and into the realm of the wild reindeer in the western mountains of Setesdal. Open all year round and free access.
At Jarebu you can take a break, eat your packed lunch, meet other hikers, enjoy the surrounding nature and perhaps browse through a book. The 25-square metre cabin has a small library and a wood-burning stove. However, you need to bring you own firewood if you plan to use the stove. There is also a solar cell panel, providing light when it gets dark. The cabin is intended for day visits only, and overnight accommodation must be in a tent or hammock nearby. The outdoor area is equipped with benches and tables.
The library in the cabin provides an experience beyond the ordinary. You will find books about nature, local history, adventures, etc. The books are intended for use in the cabin, and cannot be borrowed to take home. This service is a collaboration between the Agder County Library and the public library in the municipality of Bykle.
Jarebu is part of the concept "Dagsturhytta Agder" (Day-hike cabin Agder), a collaborative project between the municipal and county authorities and the savings bank foundation "Sparebankstiftelsen SR-Bank". By the end of 2024, each of the 25 municipalities in Agder county shall have such a cabin.
There are three separate routes to the cabin, all starting from the Bykle flood-lit trail. They are signposted, and the links below (in Norwegian) give a description and a map. Please note that the distance is measured from the respective starting points in the flootlit trail.
* Green path from Kileleitet. Easy with gradual ascent.
* Blue path from Vassverket. More demanding than the green path, with a steep section on the final stretch to the top.
* Red path from Finnflaten. Challenging with steep ascent all the way.
From the start of the floodlit trail behind the medical centre in Bykle, the distance to the cabin at Jarekollen is approx. 4 km when choosing the green (and most used) path.
